Homeschool Humor

We are currently studying Native American Indians.  Today I was reading to the kids about the southwest Indians and their dependence on and ability to raise so many varieties of corn in this harsh landscape.  I had them dig through the pantry, fridge and cupboard to find all the food that includes corn.  It’s practically everything.  They each had to make something for lunch that included corn.  We had tortilla soup, hot dogs and corn chips.  Then I asked them what hominy is.  We are not from the south…. obviously.  Here are their profound answers:

“It’s when there are two people singing different notes that go together in a song.”   :o)    OK, that’s Harmony.  Close, but no prize for you.

“It’s the land where Puff the Magic Dragon lived.”   :o)   OK, that’s Honah Lee.  Close, but no prize for you.

And my favorite answer, with a twisted brow of confusion, “How many WHAT?”

Guess what we’re having for dinner?????

I have a can in my cupboard of white hominy, that I had to import from the U.S. as it’s not available in Canada. I had a plan for it, but now I don’t remember what it was. Let me know what you come up with. Corn nuts are deep fried hominy. Mmmmm, corn nuts.

    Hey Linda,

This Native American knows what hominy is and loves it. I also married a Southern man and he knows, too. Now, do our kids know…not a clue! I should ask them what it is and let you know their responses.

My grandmother was part Cherokee Indian. She & my mother fried Hominy in a little butter or hog lard…we thought it was great for breakfast with bacon or sausage & eggs.
I have not thought of it in years until today when I decided to see if it was still available. It is and I put it on next weeks grocery list.

I cooked it for my older children, but the younger ones did not like it very we well. They preferred Cream Corn instead.
